My daughter may be somewhat ambivalent:

But I think the Twilight Sparkle costume I made her for Halloween turned out awesome. At least it's exactly what I was hoping for:
It's cozy and warm for trick-or-treating, plus the cutie mark stands out nicely:
I used Butterick 3238 (which is a great pattern to use for so many kids' costumes). I added a mane and tail made from yarn, a three-dimensional nose and ears stuffed with poly fill, and giant Anime-style MLP-FIM eyes crafted from felt and some scraps of fake leather. The horn is made from some lightweight cardboard and bias binding. Have I already mentioned my Pavlovian response to the scent of hotglue? I'm sure my heartrate spikes a little and my pupils dilate a little in response to the scent.
I only had to bribe this kid with four M&Ms to convince her to actually wear this costume for five minutes so I could photograph it.

Twilight Sparkle is her favorite character. I'm cool with that. She's academic to a fault (the entire series hinges on the plot point of her being sent to Ponyville so she can learn about friendship from real life, rather than books). She even lives in a library:
Have I mentioned how I love My Little Pony for the non-traditional female characters? It took forever to convince Lucy that Rainbow Dash is in fact a female. I don't know where she got her ideas about gender (especially considering my husband tells her all the time she can marry whoever she wants when she's older. Unfortunately, she only wants to marry me, and gets so mad when I tell her that's illegal). She assumed Rainbow Dash was male because she's aggressively competitive, yet super lazy. And she has kind of a husky voice. (The rainbow mane and tail might be a wink of sorts.) Twilight Sparkle, meanwhile, is pretty girly. Bookish, but girly. Plus she has a pet dragon who acts like her secretary.
Okay, there's a smile — finally:
Any My Little Pony fans out there? Who's your fave pony?

Lucy! Lucy is my favorite Pony!
ReplyDeleteShe looks fantastic. I hope she wears it
ReplyDeleteThank you! Me too. Or else I'm selling it to a Bronie
DeleteHehe. I can see your daughter's resemblance to you, especially when she smiles!
ReplyDeleteI hope your costume is Twilight Sparkle's secretary.
I don't know how I'll take it when she asks me to "take a letter." I'm terrrible at dictation
DeleteI was going to say the same thing! She looks just like you when she smiles :) Great job on the costume. She'll truly appreciate it in a couple of decades. Maybe three.
Deleteoh, my little pony. but didn't they used to be called my pretty pony? am i remembering the jingle wrong? okay here:
ReplyDelete"my pretty poooonyyyy / you can comb her haaaaiiiir / my pretty pooonyyyy / and tie a ribbon to show you caaaaaare / you can brush her hair and put a hat on her head / and give her a blanket when it's tiiiiime for beeeeeed / (music, 2, 3, 4) / my pretty poooonyyyy / you can give her soooo much loooove."
no?
that costume is awesomesauce, and i think lucy has inherited her mother's wit.
Nice recall! (And I like how you include the music count). My Pretty Pony was a larger doll. I don't know which came first. Here's a French commercial for My Pretty Pony: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlcjRQI5IhA&feature=related
DeleteAnd here's the old school My Little Pony commercial from the '80s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9J2vF3Q3o8
My Pretty Pony is like the unlovable older sister to the original My Little Ponies...I love that you know their theme song. My sister and I still own every single one of our My Little Ponies from the 80s/90s and my mom won't let me get them out of the attic because she knows I will actually play with them and not share them with any other children. Ever. And I'm not ashamed to be that selfish with them OR their ice cream parlor!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, this costume is so awesome. You deserve major kudos for this. I had my little ponies as a child but I don't remember ever watching a tv show about them. My parents were weird. There were a lot of things we weren't allowed to watch on tv-- which was probably pretty smart thinking back on it. I do remember watching care bears. I second the vote that you should be twilight sparkle's secretary.
ReplyDeleteThe show Lucy watches is a revival of the old version (which was admitedly terrible). The new My Little Pony is quite well written. It always starts with a cold open (which means it starts in the middle of some action, before the credits roll). And it's very, very funny. Plus the voice actors all sound like Broadway stars, they're so talented.
DeleteI love this so much! It's beyond cool! Lucy looks so cute in it! I say, bribe away if that'll keep her wearing it!
ReplyDeleteGah! This is too adorable for words. Such wonderful construction of the hood. I'm sure she'll have a blast trick or treating!
ReplyDeleteNawwwww this is adorable!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing!I remember when I was little I always wanted my mum to make me a Little Mermaid costume that I'd seen in one of her sewing catalogues, but she never did! Your Lucy doesn't know how lucky she is!
ReplyDeletewow! amazing work!
ReplyDeleteOh sweet! Glad I'm not the only one wishing for a My Little Pony Halloween costume - But I wanna Pinkie Pie!
ReplyDeletePinkie Pie is best pony ;3

ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing costume! You did such an incredible job!! My 5-year old is a huge MLP fan and its one kids show I enjoy watching with her. Its funny your daughter thought Rainbow Dash was a boy, mine thought Apple Jack was a boy. lol

ReplyDeleteYour post has been well-traveled.
Yikes. Thanks for tipping me off.
DeleteOh man, me and both my sisters LOVED MLP. My favorite (couldn't tell you the name) was an oversized clear rubbery-plastic one I had whose body was filled with silver glitter and I think she had a pink mane and tail. Yep. I would have killed for a costume like this.
